Keep the exact message
Write down the wording or use a photo you already have. Include whether the message is constant or intermittent and whether it appeared alongside reduced power. If an AdBlue countdown is displayed, include the displayed wording and value in the enquiry. Different messages can require different appointment planning.
You do not need to identify the failed part yourself. A DPF warning, an emissions warning and a general engine-management light are not interchangeable descriptions. Tell us what the vehicle actually displayed.
Make a short timeline
- When the warning first appeared and what you noticed.
- Whether there were earlier warnings or changes in drivability.
- Diagnostic reports and complete fault-code descriptions already supplied.
- Repairs, cleaning, software work or fluid top-ups since then.
- What changed afterwards and whether the warning returned.
Dates and mileage from invoices are useful where available. An accurate record of a previous repair helps distinguish a new issue from an unresolved one. Say when a detail is uncertain rather than filling a gap with an assumption.
Choose the appropriate enquiry
| Concern | Useful starting information |
|---|---|
| DPF or regeneration warning | Exact message, journey pattern, earlier regeneration or cleaning work and diagnostic report. |
| EGR-related fault report | Code and description, running symptoms and earlier valve or cooler repairs. |
| AdBlue / SCR message | Displayed message or countdown, top-up history and any previous sensor or system work. |
A code is a clue to investigate
Keep the full report, including the controller and code description. A code can refer to a measured condition, a circuit or system performance. Its presence alone does not confirm that replacing the component named in a short description will solve the problem.
The workshop can explain which checks are appropriate for the vehicle and what the findings mean. The next step depends on the investigation; this page does not diagnose a fault from a warning message or recommend a driving routine to clear it.
If you also want a remap
Make the warning history the first part of the enquiry, then explain your tuning objective. A van used for deliveries and a daily car may have different needs, but both need unresolved concerns considered before extra output is requested. See engine tuning for a separate calibration discussion.
Newport, Cwmbran, Caerleon, Risca and nearby customers can send their vehicle details before arranging the workshop visit. Include the registration, engine, transmission and any previous remap alongside the warning history.
Should I send a short code list or the whole report?
The complete report is more useful. It preserves the descriptions, controller and other details needed to understand the earlier investigation.
Does this guide confirm that it is safe to drive?
No. It is an enquiry checklist, not an assessment of your vehicle. Use the vehicle handbook and arrange appropriate assistance for a current warning or breakdown.
